On March 22, 2017, the Center for Engineering Education Innovation held the SENG Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition for the fourth time. The event attracted candidates from eight engineering disciplines initially. After the pre-selection interviews, eight students from six disciplines were shortlisted for the final round. The contestants’ presentations attracted the audience’s attention greatly and encouraged a lively discussion following each of them among the contestant, the judging panel, and the audience about his/her research. After an hour and half’s competition, Teng Feng (Andrea), Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering PhD student under the supervision of Prof Ying Chau, won the championship. The second and the third places went to Swapnadeep Poddar, Electronic & Computer Engineering PhD student under the supervision of Prof Zhiyong Fan, and Konstantinos Spandagos, Civil & Environmental Engineering PhD student under the supervision of Prof Tze Ling Ng. The People’s Choice Award went to Laurence Lau, Bioengineering PhD student under the supervision of Prof Ying Chau. As the Champion of the 2017 SENG 3MT® Competition, Andrea will also compete in the 2017 Asia-Pacific 3MT® Competition to be held at the University of Queensland on September 29, 2017.
3MT® is a research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland. It aims at challenging research students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so that they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience.
